In the winter months it can become easier to start over-eating and want to hibernate do to the cold and lack of access to typical outdoor activities depending on your area.
This is where thinking ‘outside the box’ and trying new activities you have never done before can help you to become more active during this colder time of year.
To be honest, at some point during the long winter I begin to feel like this, but I have learned to get out and take advantage of some fun activities that can be both physically and mentally rewarding.
I have decided to not let the cold weather stop me from enjoying outdoor physical activities and take it on as a challenge to try new things.
I have come up with some of the BEST and funnest winter activities to get you outside moving around; sure to get you fit!
A fatbike or fat tire bike is an off-road bicycle with over sized tires capable of riding on soft, unstable terrain like snow, sand, and mud. The fat tires allow for a safer and smooth ride over rough obstacles.
Fatbikes typically look and ride just like a standard bicycle, but with larger tires to accommodate for unstable ground.
This bike is a great idea for those that already enjoy bicycling and for many others looking to try something new and exciting.
In many areas they are even creating trails and paths for fatbike riders, so check out your local park and recreation board if you’re interested to see what is available.
I personally enjoy biking and look forward to giving this a try.
#2. Ice Skating
I live in the Upper Mid-West, so it gets really cold in the winter and hockey is a big sport here. I grew-up playing hockey outdoors at the local rinks and played Pee-Wee league for a few years and really enjoyed it.
When you’re a kid you don’t really look at things as exercise, but more as fun things to do.
Hockey or just ice-skating is an excellent way to get out of the house and get in some physical fitness without really even realizing it. This is a fun activity to do with friends, family, and a great way to meet new people.
If you don’t have outdoor ice rinks in your area try checking to see if you have indoor ice rinks.
Indoor ice rinks offer all the same benefits minus the cold.
Give this a try next time you don’t know what to do and it might just become one of your favorite winter time activities.
Skiing is a fantastic activity to get you outdoors to enjoy the winter months.
Whether it be cross-country or down hill; skiing is fun and will challenge you physically in many ways.
Cross-country skiing is a great full-body workout that is the adventurers perfect winter activity. You can find many trails or blaze you own through your areas park and recreational designations.
Down hill skiing and snow boarding can also be fun ways to get in some exercise while having a great time outdoors.
If you don’t have enough snow in your area to ski, give rollerblading a try.
This is a fun way to explore new areas that may be harder to access with your typical outdoor gear.
Snowshoes are footwear for walking on deep snow without sinking through. They do this by distributing your weight over a larger area.
If you like to hike and take on new adventures, snowshoeing could be an excellent way for you to continue what you enjoy through the winter months.
Snowshoes have been around for centuries and traditionally used by hunters, trappers, and traders. Today they are widely used by anyone looking to enjoy a winter-time outdoor hike.
This is by far one of the funniest winter-time activities other than a good ole snowball fight to get you moving around outdoors.
Sledding is a great way to spend time with your family and friends; racing each other down a hill and laughing your way back up the hill over-and-over again never gets old.
Also, if you have kids you can sit them in the sled and pull them around. You get exercise and they enjoy the ride.
Sledding is very inexpensive to do and really may not seem like your getting in exercise, but walking back up the hill repeatedly is a great muscular and cardiovascular workout for sure.
Some of the best winter activities encourage togetherness and sharing the moment with people that you want to spend more time with.
Doing things that can create long-lasting memories and possibly start traditions will give you something to look forward to when winter rolls around each year.
